Shree Vyasadeva
seen dictating the epic Mahabharata
to his scribe muladhara
adhipati, Lord of the basal plexus, the
Elemental God Ganapati,
ॐ पार्थाय प्रतिभोधितां भगवता नारायणेन स्वयं।
व्यासेन
ग्रथितां पुराणमुनिनां मध्ये महाभारतम्॥
This scripture that has come to us as the spoken wordsof the Lord is indeed a soliloquy, svagatam. It appears as an episode narrated by the Epic
Sage Vyasamuni. as the instructions given to Partha, Arjuna, by the supreme
Lord Narayana Himself.
The Bhagavad-Gita
comes in the middle of Mahabharata (Bhishma parva Chs. 23-40),
It may
also be construed that the Bhagavad-Gita is a dialogue between Arjuna, the
confused mind seeking clarity, guidance from Higher Mind and Sri Hari Narayana
as Shree Krishna, the pure Consciousness- the ‘purnaprajnya’ imparting him the various options to get liberated
from the grip of maya! .
Shree
Krishna Dvaipayana (Vyasadeva) is seen here dictating Mahabharata which
includes the Bhagavad-Gita and Lord Ganapati taking dictation. The Bhagavad-Gita
starts with Minister Sanjaya narrating the happenings at the Kurukshetra Battlefield
to the Blind King Dhrutarashtra. But, it is ironical that the supreme Lord
says, “I am Veda vyasa, Arjuna, Kapila
Muni, and all that!” (Ch. X. Vibhuti Yoga). Bhagavan Shree Krishna says, “I imparted this ‘brahmavidya’ ‘yogashastra’
to Vivasvan, the Sun, who in turn told this to Manu, who told this to Ikshvaku, and so on, and was lost time and again!” Further, the supreme Lord warns,
“This secret knowledge should not be shared
with persons who do not have faith.
The
Bhagavad-Gita is one of the rarest
spiritual Texts that dates back to the very origin of the Universe, ‘Brahmanda’, the
cosmos. The Gita explains how our ‘solar system’- the sun, the earth and its
satellite, the planets around the earth and the life-forms are created. Here,
the supreme Lord Bhagavan Shree Krishna reveals ‘Who He Is’, as also,
‘how the universe is created, sustained, and finally destroyed by Him’. The
Lord Creator Himself reveals many a secrets. The most perplexing aspect of the
Gita is this ‘secret’ revealed to His friend Arjuna and how something the Lord
feels it a ‘secret’ can ever be understood by us, the mortals, endowed with
limited faculties.
First of all, these are the ‘spoken words of
the Lord, Bhagavan Shree Krishna and dated back to the very timeless,
beginningless beginning! In fact, time (kaal) and space (akasha) manifest from
Him, the Bhagavan! These statements are supported by the relevant verses given
here.
So far, we find more than a hundred
thousand commentaries written on the Gita, in almost all the prominent
languages of the world. Unfortunately most of these are just repetitions of
some published works and contain lots of errors, wrong interpretations due to
misunderstandings. For fear of copyright restrictions, many authors and their
publishers have twisted the original spoken words of the Lord and thereby
mislead us. Despite all the scholarly interpretations the Gita remains a
well-guarded secret forever since it is very difficult to understand the words
of Bhagavan Shree Krishna by us, the ordinary mortals. A clear understanding of
the Gita requires a sustained effort by an ardent devotee and total devotion to
Bhagavan Shree Krishna. Further, much
depends on Lord’s grace, purva punya and the touch of an attained person -
‘guru’. Revelations happen when the devotee gets the knowledge of the Self,
‘atma sakshatkara’.
The
spiritual essence of the Gita. ‘amruta-varshinim’, is showering of the
blessings of the Lord that brings ‘moksha’, fulfillment to the tormented jivas.
It is the ‘moksha patha’, path to the highest seat, ‘param dhama’, the ultimate
goal of life. It brings about the release of the eternally bonded embodied
soul, the jivatman, from ‘metempsychosis’, cycle of births and deaths. It is
‘purushartha sadhana’, the very purpose of life to fulfill the desires of all
sorts on the basis of dharma, righteousness and ‘attainment of moksha. In fact,
the purpose of life is to know the true nature of the soul, jivatman. The Gita
shows the way. It leads us to Light from darkness, to knowledge from ignorance,
and to immortality from death. We all are born in ignorance and live in
ignorance as the slaves of our senses, fickle mind, perverted intelligence, and
the powerful ego. We suffer dualities of joy and misery, pain and pleasure,
likes and dislikes, etc. The Gita comes as a guide to redeem us from
sufferings, reveal the true nature of the jiva and enlighten us. It is a divine
gift to us..
