Initiation (Deeksha)

There is a system of initiation of a disciple into spiritual world and, this is done by a 'guru', an attained person. It seems Sri Ramakrishna's wife Smt. Sharadamba used to initiate anybody and everybody, even on Railway platforms in Howrah and Calcutta. We are not questioning the powers or methodology here. In a way, almost all are initiated, some soon after birth, and some after eight years of age with thread ceremony and brahmopadesham. The disciple is given a mantra here. This is in a way breathing into the ear a sacred word that protects the son or disciple. mantra is a powerful tool that protects whoever uses it with faith, sanctity and discretion.
This 'mantra deeksha' is an elaborate ritual for some. It is just a symbolic presentation in most of the cases. But, initiation is a must for all. There cannot be a sense of direction without this initiation, whether the guru takes care of the disciple or not later. It is also open to  question how many are interested in spiritual pursuits even after this initiation or deeksha. Hence, in many cases it is an academic exercise. But, what exactly happens is the effect of deeksha on the disciple or seeker. This initiation acts as a 'flow of current', the individualised limited spiritual power inherent in the jiva within gets connected to the abundant reservoir of cosmic energy! The individualised soul (Atman) gets activated, and gets connected to super soul paramatman. Thus the outward journey of the embodied soul begins! What was hitherto a limited journey within the terrestrial sphere, bhu loka, going round and round, taking repeated births takes an upward trajectory like the spacecraft leaving the earth. This is the purpose.
