Bhagavan Shree Krishna has made it amply clear to Arjuna that "the Jivatma and paramatma are one only" and He, the Bhagavan, is the Higher Self (Paramatma). Arjuna as a jivatman is the Lower Self. This is like the lotus that has its root in the soil below while the flower blooms above the water; not a drop of water ever sticks to the lotus leaf! Giving clear instructions in Yoga (japa and dhyana /meditation) as Yogacharya, His advice to us, the householders in particular, is that one need not run away from family and society in order to seek spiritual attainments.
The sum and substance of Karma-Sanyasayoga is: "One should strive to work for the welfare of the society- dharma. Always uphold dharma at any cost. Abide by dharma is the clarion call, Dharma protects one who abides by dharma- dharmorakshati rakshitah | The lord descends to Earth as 'pure consciousness' to ensure dharma whenever people neglect it. He says, dharma samsthapanaarthaya sambhavaami yuge yuge || Righteousness or dharma is the foundation of society. A person shall be happy, peaceful, and joyous discharging his duty true to his consciousness surrendering the fruits of action. Self-less service is the clue to happiness; " anybody can attain to the highest state of Krishna Consciousness by 'nishkama karma'- offering all actions to Him, saying: shree krishnarpanamastu. The devotee is blessed with success and happiness whenever he utters the name of the Lord. sarva dharmaan parityajya maamekam sharanam vrajaa | says the Lord. He goes to the extent of saying, Better keep quiet, don't even desire and resolve to perform action. Sarvakarma parityaagi is beloved to Me," He says. These are the words of Bhagavan. It is difficult to understand these by us, the mortals. How can we understand the words of Higher Consciousness (Sahasrar prajnya) of pure state, living as we are at the lowest (muladhara prajnya)- eating, sleeping, and whiling away our time in mundane activities and sensuousness?
