Looking Forward 2020s AD

    There are almost 800 crore people allover the world. Of these, nearly half the population is found in East and South-East Asia. There are vast regions of deserts - both hot and cold, forests and high and dry plateau that have no population or scarcely populated. Surprisingly, there are beautiful places that are yet to be explored by man! The life and activities of people of the people range from almost nomadic to tribal, pastoral to farming and industrial; there are backward and progressive people. Now it is difficult to say what holds for these millions of people who are deprived of even basic necessities of life! The future is not all bright. There are many countries waging war with neighbors and some problematic ones are creating problems everywhere inciting hatred and terrorist activities. These rogue countries have to be tamed! It is a difficult proposition to bring the fundamentalists to conference tables and make them realize hatred and strife will not pay in the long run. If people are to be happy, the only way is peace and mutual trust and help! The Year 2020 and the next ten years are crucial for many to survive since there are large scale migrations, illegal entrants to not only their neighboring, but far off countries, too! There are refugee taking risk of crossing seas seeking new homes. The entire world is in a turmoil and, war is no solution. Advancement in science and technology will make little dent in this situation.

Looking Back the Year that was 2019

The Year 2019 AD is marked by nature's fury like, floods, forest fires and bush fiers, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and some parts of the land sinking and totally disappearing in sea in addition to lack of drinking water, refugee influxes, large scale migrants, etc. Global warming, melting of glaciers, and erratic monsoons have added to the human misery. May be, the Third World War is imminent! Much worse people came into streets in almost 180 countries of the world protesting against the Governments and bombings in Syria, Mogadishu, etc are not to be mentioned? What has gone wrong with the world?
  Yes. Everything has gone wrong with the world because of total degeneration. People have lost their sense of human existence and become more and more inhuman in their day to day life. Somebody aptly said, "I hate these humans. I love humanity". Human evolution is not progressing from Australopithecus, pekinenses, javanus, and other state of homo sapiens to more human and divine consciousness. The problem is not the humans, as such! It is the warning!
  This is the last quarter, called Kali yuga of the 7th manvantara, called Vaivasvata manvantara. This is coming to a close leading to the next Savarni manvantara, sooner or later. The first quarter of the Kaliyuga is coming to a close! The Kali yuga will end disastrously, just like the six manvantaras and their 27 yugas, so far! Thus we are at the end of the manvantara! Those who abide by dharma, take to spiritual path will become the seed for the next manvantara! Rest all will perish. The Bhagavad-Gita and most of the puranas, particularly the Vishnu Purana, Padma Purana, the Shiva purana make these points clear.
  So far, so good! Not much damage has been done in the Bharata varsha. the influx of the Western religious cults have done some damage to the great Hindu spiritual pursuits of the saints and sadhus! This is the yoga bhumi and people have forgotten their roots and are aping the Western culture to their own peril. Who cares? Why bother is the attitude. let the world perish. But save your soul!
   However, there is a cliche here as to what exactly is 'time'! In the strict sense of the term, there is no such thing as 'Time'. "Time is an illusion"! It is the ingenuity of the human mind that creates, divides, disseminate what is not there and this the 'ma ya' (that which is measurable)! The Sky or space is another such ma ya! That which is 'nothing' accommodates 'everything' that does not really exist! The moment radiation of electromagnetic waves move out of Stars (Sun included) there begins time and space is created wherever these electromagnetic waves move out (in 360 Deg.). So who will tell us 'when did the light start from Sun', and where did it reach, and how far and how long it lasts?

From Death to Immortality

    Rise up from this place, O man, do not fall down, but cast off the fetters of Death which now hold you. Do not cut yourself off from this world of men, from the sight of the Fire and the Sun. May the great Wind breathe purification upon you, May the Waters rain immortality upon you, may the Sun warm your body with blessing, may Death show you mercy! Do not perish!  I charge you to rise, O man, not to fall. Long life I impart to you and skill for living. Mount safe and sound on this chariot of deathlessness. You shall speak in old age, full of wisdom! Let not your mind stray away and be lost. Do not spurn the living and follow the Fathers! May All-Gods protect you right here! [Atharva Veda VIII, 1, 1-7]
 tad srushtva tadevanupravishat |
   That Deity thought: 'Let Me now enter into those three deities by means of this living self and let Me then develop names and forms.' [Sama Veda, Chandogya Upanishad VI, III - The Threefold Development, 2]

Prakruti-Purusha

   tvam Adideva purusha puranamstvastya vishvatma param nidhanam || (Ch 1. Verse 39)
   This verse eulogises the Lord as the 'Adi deva purusha'. the primal Deity, primordial seed of creation! He has created andentered it (His creation). He dwells in us all! the supreme Lord is immutable, self-effulgent, and eteranl being.  As to the term 'Being', the verse 37 explains thus,:"Being is that which exists! Non-being is that with reference to whichthe idea of non-existence arises. Thus, He is both Being and the non-being- param Atman and Jiva Atman. The Immutable is transcendental to being and nob-being.The learned sages have declared as 'One'. He is everything. sarvam khaluvidam brahma ||
  Prakrutim purusham chaiva (Ch.13. Verse 19). This verse makes it amply clear that there is no beginning or end to this jivatman and the prakruti. The individual soul (jivatman) is the manifest form of the one supreme unborn, eternal, and His nature. The Bhagavad-Gita has clearly defined the concepts of ''Prakruti and 'Purusha'  (Ch. XVIII Verses 40-41). Everything is born of 'guna', qualities of Nature (prakruti). 'One only becomes many' is the principle. It is tamas becoming, rajas and sattva by its own nature. Here again, 'guneshu gunanuvartante' is the principle. Everybody presents these qualities day and night all through life! A person shows tamas in the night, becomes sattvic in the morning and evening and rajasic throughout the day. Rajas makes one active, while tamas makes him/her indolent, lazy and inactive. Sattva is normally short-lived in all! Sattva makes a person almost contemplative on higher aspects of life.
    Nature means the guna, prakruti, maya of God. (Verse 40). God is the 'mahapurusha' who manifests as jivatman. The One who inherits the pura (body) is the purusha! Purusha is the embodied soul, jivatman. His nature is the quality of the person!
  It may be surprising to know the way the living beings take certain forms from almost the invisible brahmn! The Bhagavad-Gita has narrated how the jiva takes shape. The soul comes to earth as an ion of electrical spark from solar radiation carrying the radiant energy of other distant stars, as well! This is evident from the hydrogen and oxygen ions in our atmosphere and water-vapor in the clouds. The rain drops that fall to earth gets mixed with the soil and create life forms of all sorts! The life-force enters and departs at will! It creates life forms like plants, animals, humans, whenever and wherever it enters as a biotic entity, Thus all are just the hydrogen, oxygen, carbon content at its root! The scriptures praise the Lord as Hari sarvottama and vayu jeevottama!
   The soul, indeed, is the purusha and the body is His own creation! Since the soul is all-knowing and all-powerful it is capable of entering anywhere and create a body of organs of His like! Thus we all have entered the earth and the food and became the spermatozoa creating a form when impregnated in the woman's egg-cell. We have created our own tissues, organs and body from cell division and cell multiplication in the woman's body and make them mother and father after our birth!
   This is stated as Atma eva brahma | ayam Atma brahma | Atmavai vedgm sarvam | aham brahmasmi |

In the Beginning

   In the beginning, my dear, this universe was Being (Sat) alone, one only without a second. Some say that in the beginning this was non-being (asat) alone, one only without a second; and from that non-being, being was born. Aruni said: But how, indeed, could it be thus, my dear? How could Being be born from non-being? No, my dear, it was Being alone that existed in the beginning, one only without a second. It (Being, or Brahman) thought: 'May I be many; may I grow forth.' It created fire. That fire thought: 'May I be many; may I grow forth.' It created water. That is why, whenever a person is hot and perspires, water is produced from fire (heat) alone.  Homage to Death, the end of life! Here rest your breath, both inward and outward! May the life of this man be maintained in the realm of the Sun, in the world of deathlessness! The power of God has raised him up, the heavenly Drink has raised him up, the powers of the Storm, of Heaven and of Fire, have raised him up to well-being. [Atharva Veda VIII, 1, 1-2].That water thought: 'May I be many; may I grow forth.' It created food (i.e. earth). That is why, whenever it rains anywhere, abundant food is produced. From water alone is edible food produced.[Samavda, Chandogya Upanishad VI, II - Brahman: the Cause of the Universe,1-4]
Of all these living beings, there are only three origins: those born from an egg, those born from a living being and those born from a sprout.[Sama Veda, Chandogya Upanishad VI, III - The Threefold Development, 1]
These glorious drops are my health and salvation: they strengthen my joints as thongs do a cart. May these droplets guard my foot lest it stumble and chase from my body all manner of ills.Make shine brightly like fire produced by friction. Illumine us, make us ever more prosperous. Enthused by you, Soma, I find myself rich! Enter within us for our well-being.With hearts inspired may we relish the Juice like treasure inherited from our Fathers! Lengthen our days, King Soma, as the sun causes the shining days to grow longer[Rig Veda VIII, 48,5-7]

"Jnyani is Very Dear to Me"

   Bhagavan says, "Jnyani, the man of knowledge, is very dear to Me". (Ch. 7 Verse 17). Who is a jnyani is also explained in this verse. The person endowed with 'Knowledge' (jnyan) is steadfast, single-minded, totally devoted to Him. Further, it is also stated that 'shruddhavan labhate jnyan...| Knowledge is available only to those who are devoted to Him totally, with focused attention, single-minded, always thinking of Him.
   'Knowledge (Jnyan) is stated to be the one pertaining to the Lord, not the materialistic world. The knowledge pertaining to the materialistic world is of lower type (apara vidya). But this superior knowledge is higher, 'para vidya'. The knowledge pertaining to worldly sensuous life is of no use since it is ever-changing and is of mundane nature. The joy and happiness obtained from worldly knowledge is temporal, disappointing, sooner or later. It will not give a lasting, permanent happiness. Higher knowledge, on the other hand, pertains to liberation, emancipation, mukti and breaks the shackles of births and deaths, and gives eternal happiness. The embodied soul, indeed, looks for liberation!
   A jnyani is one who has taken to yoga (at the earliest?) and steadfastly adhered to it. Thus, he has excelled the ordinary mundane worldly seekers.  He has realized the futility of mundane existence. He has attained to the 'turiya' and thereby transcended 'time-space' bondage, duality, crossed beyond causality and karma klesha. He is sarvasha, sarvabhava and sarvarambha parityagi, nirasakta, in the Lord's own opinion,as stated by him!
  Thus, all those who aspire for the higher knowledge are yogi, blessed and redeemed! They are dear to Him.

The Self

   "He who inhabits the mind, yet is within the mind, whom the mind does not know, whose body the mind is and who controls the mind from within-He is your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal. He who inhabits the skin, yet is within the skin, whom the skin does not know, whose body the skin is and who controls the skin from within-He is your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal. He who inhabits the intellect (vijnana), yet is within the intellect, whom the intellect does not know, whose body the intellect is and who controls the intellect from within-He is your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal.He who inhabits the organ of generation, yet is within the organ, whom the organ does not know, whose body the organ is and who controls the organ from within-He is your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal. He is never seen, but is the Seer; He is never heard, but is the Hearer; He is never thought of, but is the Thinker; He is never known, but is the Knower. There is no other seer than He, there is no other hearer than He, there is no other thinker than He, there is no other knower than He. He is your Self, the Inner Controller, the Immortal. Everything else but Him is perishable. Thereupon Uddilaka, the son of Aruna, held his peace.[Yajur Veda, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad III, VII-Yajnavalkya and Uddalaka, 16]
   Accept the healing remedy your mother and your father bring together with your sister and your brother. I make you one who reaches ripe old age.Live on, O man, with your spirit unimpaired. Do not follow the messengers sent by Yama! Remember the cities where the living dwell! [Atharva Veda V, 30, 6]
  Come back hither in response to our calls, you who know the path that lies ahead, the way and the ascent of every living person!. [Atharva Veda V, 30, 7]

Seven Steps to Kaivalya Dham

   Kaivalya dham or Kailash and Vaikuntha are considered the abode of Shiva and Vishnu, respectively. Every jiva aspires to reach the param pada, the feet of Shiva or Vishnu. Once the jiva gets embodied on the earth as a mortal it undergoes trails and travails. It finally realizes the futility of its mundane existence. It is only after this realization of the futility of mundane existence that the jiva seeks guidance and looks for redemption. The learned sages have realized the 'truth'. They guide the seekers to find salvation. However, the jiva has to strive hard to attain its goal.
   The seven steps to kaivalya, attainment of moksha are declared in the Gita to be: jnyana, viveka, vairagya, yajnya, dana, and tapas. These are sure steps to liberation, mukti of the embedded, embodied, mortal jiva. The jiva should climb every step steadily, carefully, and hold on to firmly till the next step is reached. This is not easy. there is every chance of getting losing grip and falling back! The guidance and support of a guru is essential here.
   Jnyan is defined in the Gita. The jiva shall strive to realize its true nature, The Blessed Lord says, the "jnyani is very dear to Me." Here, jnyan, knowledge is not the information about the mundane collected from the material world. It is the para vidya, higher knowledge, supreme knowledge Vedanta- spiritual knowledge. This 'Knowledge of the Self', Atma-jnyan, cannot be obtained until and unless one closes the door to the external world and start the inner inner journey. This viveka, wisdom, churned out of right knowledge also comes with the help of a guru. So one has to start life of surrender to the higher self with all humility and live a life of simplicity, renunciation.
   The jiva should first realize its predicament, Unless it realizes that it is in a wrong place there will be no effort to seek the right one. If the jive rejoices in its mundane existence due to ignorance there is no problem. It will take repeated births and deaths until it seeks redemption, one day!
   The jiva has to experience in full, with full awareness, what it is doing and what it wants. Then only, the right knowledge comes. But, such a knowledge will rarely come to a jiva running on errands due to its unending desires! Attachment to the mundane clouds its intelligence and it is very difficult to tutor the jiva and guide it on the right path, sat nyasa.

Hidden Secrets in the Gita

   As we have noticed in the previous blogs, the Bhagavad-Gita is full of secrets that will not be understood by ordinary readers. Bhagavan Himself says, "guhyatama guhyamam pravashyami, shrunomi | What is that secret" If Bhagavan says it is a secret can we, mortals ever understand it?  Arjuna is perplexed, so are we! We can never understand these secrets until our inner eye opens to the 'true self' by 'Atma bodha', Knowledge of the Self. 'Atma jnyan' is very important. It is essential to have the basic understanding of 'Who am I" to know what is this creation and who is the creator. It is almost impossible to know all these without a 'guru', an attained person, who will impart this to us. But why one should take the trouble of teaching us when we are not at all interested in going to him? It is by our earnest prayer to the Lord, that a guru is sent to us and we don not ask for one? Why should one bother about the other world when we are happy enjoying the sensuous world? We do not bother to hear the warning of the great sages like Ashtavakra, Avadhoota, or Raikva. They all warn that we are rejoicing when the poisonous snake of unending desires has bitten us and the poison is rising! Well, it is left to the sweet will and pleasure of the seeker?
   Now, the secret knowledge imparted to Arjuna is very important. The Blessed lord imparts the knowledge of 'brahmn', the ultimate seat, param pada. It is brahm vidya and yogopanishad. One can attain supreme bliss by acquiring the knowledge of the Self, Atma-jnyan, practicing yoga and pranayama.

'Margashirsha'

   The month of 'Maharashtra' of the Hindu Calendar (panchanga) is a very auspicious month and Bhagavan Shree Krishna says, "I am Margashirsha'." The term 'marga-shirsha' is a sign board at cross roads and it points to the right path desired by the traveler, path-seeker! It is celebrated as Gita jayanti days, Gita abhiyana period, when the Bhagavad-Gits parayana is carried out.For a sincere seeker, the entire year is marga shirsha!
 Now, it is time to think of salvation. It is almost the end of Vaivasvata manvantara. Kali yuga is coming to a close sooner or later. The humanity is at cross-roads. There is viplava, confusion, turmoil in the weather conditions, restlessness in the minds of the people and people are revolting against the system everywhere. The Gita shows the path of redemption. Now it is absolutely essential for all to think of the 'purpose of life', 'purushartha', rather than go in mad pursuit of sensuous worldly attainments. Nothing counts at the end!
   The beauty of the Gita is that it shows not just one, but several paths of salvation. Every type of jiva is addressed here- tamasic, rajasic, sattvic, and it is not even necessary to do anything for this purpose of redemption!

Descent and Ascent of the Jiva

   As humans, we are endowed with certain intelligence, discerning, disseminating and discriminating ability. This inherent faculty can help us to understand how the jiva is a product of assimilation of many invisible gaseous elements shaped by forces that we may never know! For instance, our physical body is made up of Hydrogen and Oxygen that makes up water (almost seventy percent of our body!) and carbon, calcium, etc! These are almost invisible and appear gross in their appearance, but yet subtler! There are many other forces that constantly keep us moving, grow up, procreate and feel as if we are the real ones. Alas, these can die out, decay, disintegrate and disappear altogether!
   But, then, what is the reality of our existence? In fact, it is 'nothing'; nothingness is the reality! Nothingness appear as something only to disappear as is nothing. Someone asked, 'where do the ants come from when some sweets are kept in the open'? The answer is very simple. 'These ants were already there in the sweets in an invisible form as a part of the sweets! The scripture give details of creation, sustenance, dissolution and merger. Accordingly, the first emanate of 'brahmn' is space (Akasha). From Akasha emanates air (vayu) and subsequently, from both these emanate fire (agni); so also, the water and the earth emanate from combination of all these emerged elements. Thus all are part and parcel of the first emanate 'brahmn' which is nothingness for all practical purposes!
   Now, all that exist here on earth is just the combination, compounds, of simple elements! The body is made up of cells, tissues, and organs. The body disappears as and when the parts depart or disappear! However, the soul that enabled the body to live and work accumulated memories, experiences, fruits of action (karmaklesha), nature or qualities of the earth- of the food, water, and all sorts of desires, etc. condemns the jiva to struggle life after life without redemption, liberation, mukti, moksha, break off shackles or chain of births and deaths and rebirths, or release from eternal bondage! The soul gets enmeshed, tainted, or burdened with the loads of karma!
   The Rk Veda describes the nature of existence in the Mandala X. 'Purusha' is the person who occupies the body (pura). The human body is a physical entity made of flesh, bone and blood. But the life-force, prana, enters it to make it a living organism. The life-force is the oxygen derived from air is gross but the real energy aspect (entity?) is a 'non-entity'. It is a stellar dust particle, an ion, a photon, an unimaginably intelligent, self-effulgent, eternal, unborn, and undying aspect, The soul is the 'purusha', the intelligence aspect of the ignorant aspect- body entity! To expect the ignorant gross entity (borne out of the earth) to revert to the subtle-most intelligence aspect of the heavens is a tall order!
    Thus, the secret of the nature of our existence is revealed! We all are elemental bodies.We appear and disappear. The descent of the jiva is explained as the spiritual component and the body is the composition of the earthen material. The jiva is elemental at the gross level and spiritual at the core. The physical body may disintegrate but not the soul. The ascent of the jiva to its original natural non-elemental or spiritual state needs a concerted effort through practice of yoga. Ultimately, the jiva has to revert to its natural spiritual state. This is not an easy one.

Origin of the Sound and Mantra

   A 'Seer', a 'Rishi', is a mantra drushtara' who receives and, thus, knows where the mantra originates! shabda (Sound) is the tanmatra of Akasha. Sound moves in space. May be, wind carries sound like it carries fragrance. But, where does the sound originate? Normally, sound is generated by vibration, flow or movement. Any vibration due to compression, expansion, and / or friction creates sound. Air, fire, water,  earth and all the moving objects on the earth cause sounds of various frequencies ranging from very feeble, almost inaudible, to extremely strong like thunder or blasts in mines! Apart from these external sources, the origin of the sound is traced to the internal function of ourselves. The air we breathe, the food we eat and all other internal and external activities create sounds of all sorts! Thus, it is fair enough to state that the primordial sound has emanated from the flow of Light, radiation of electromagnetic waves! Om is said to be the first sound emanated from the sound and is still found in the sky (space).  This sound is said to be sacred and called the pranava mantra.
  Almost all sounds that are emanated from the natural elements are capable of inducing emotions of different kinds in us. These are also the basic expressions of all living creatures that may disturb us, or make us glad, angry, amused, get frightened, etc. Thus, human emotions of different types are stirred by sounds of different types. But, the basic factor that create sound within us is theair we breathe in and breath out! These are life-force, pranic waves described as five major- prana, vyana, apana, udana, and samana and five minor ones- naga, kurma, kukrura, dhanajaya, and devadutta. All these sounds are caused by circulation of air within our body.
  The sounds that are deciphered as alphabets under the category of vowels and consonants originate within our body. The vowels (svara) starting from a, A, i, I, u, oo (U), ru, Roo, lRu, lRoo, ye, ai, ou, aou, am aH, All these are powerful sounds that possess power of creation (srushti), sustenance (sthiti) and dissolution (laya) and merger (vilya)! All the consonants (vyanjana) starting from 'ka' varga (class) to 'pa' varga (class) have the powers to create the universe starting from space, air, fire, water and earth as well as food, and organs of living beings of all sorts!
ka-varga: Create five elements (pancha bhuta) such as space, air, fire, water and earth;
ca-varga: Create the tanmatra of panchabuta such as sound, touch, form, taste and smell;
Ta-varga: Create the five sense organs (jnyanendriya) to experience the tanmatras as above;
ta-varga: Create the five karmendria to work out the five indriya, such digest, excrete, etc;
pa-varga: stand for the powers of creation, sustenance,dissolution, appear and disappear at will
                (tirodhana) and grace of the Lord;
ya, ra, la, va stand for the powers of the five elements such as earth, water, fire, air, etc.
                These are also chakras (turning wheel with blades like that of a Fan) within us from
                 muladhara to sahasrara producing energy;
Sha, sha, sa, ha, stand for the powers behind our existence such as the activity of breathing, sound of our uchvas (in-breath) or srushti, and nihshvas (out-breath) dissolution;
ksha stands for the gradual decline (kshara)
   Thus every syllable from 'a' to 'ksha' that contain the power of Creation 'ra' is called akshara
  These alphabets, varnakshara possessing power of creation, sustenance, dissolution and merger, and protection is called a mantra (tarayate iti) ! Any sound shabda of an alphabet (akshara) that is capable of protection, ward off obstacles, save us, or help us in anyways is called a mantra. And, the surprising thing is that these originate no where else but within us only!

Gayatri Mantra (contd.)

Gayatri mantra (contd.)
   'Geeyate', 'gaayanti' , 'gee' , etc denote singing. The mantra is that which protects, 'trayate iti'. The mantra is actually the divine sound that protects us. The sound emanates in the sky, akasha. The 'tanmatra' of akasha is shabda. It is the first emanate as the guna, quality, essence of the sky. The space provides a media for transmission of sound, light, waves, vibrations and create wonders! Light, for instance contains seven colors, three basic ones such as black (tamas), White (sattva), and red (rajas); other colors are just the shades and mixtures of these! Now the vibration of sounds in different intensity, wavelengths, and frequencies create wonders of creation! So also, the sounds of different decibles create emotions in mind and many are so intense that they create lot of problems. Besides these, there are many other complex waves such as alpha, beta, teta, gamma, etc and the alphabets of different sounds emanating within our own body such as stomach, heart, neck, tongue and lips! There is no end to these.
   The Gayatri mantra is the beginning of these sounds of different frequencies and vibrations that create the very paraphernalia of the physical, material, objective world! Each and every quality is represented by a goddess and her mantra (body) with a core (Atman) as the Bija (akshara) The following are the bijakshara and mantra of the twenty-four devatas of Gayatri mantra envisioned by the Rishi, drushtara Vishva Mitra in the Metre of Gayatri of 4 feet (pada) of 24 letters by the grace of paramatma Narayana.
    There are twelve vaidiki and twelve  tantriki devata as shown below

Gayatri mantra is the most  powerful tool in meditation and it is actually a medicine- medi tat (shakti) i on (concentrate on)!
   Shruddha and bhakti and total faith are very important for success.

Shakti Worship, Gayatri, and Abiding Dharma

     India has diverse culture and religious faiths based on the level of understanding of the followers or devotees. There is a tradition (parampara) of Guru-shishya (teacher-student) that has come from times immemorial! The guru dictates certain dos and don'ts and the students follow it devotedly. There are certain cults that are prohibited in Vedic culture (veda bahira). The scriptures prescribe certain conditions, methodology, shastra, achara samhita, rules and regulations. All these have faded out in modern days and the youngsters question the validity of these! It is difficult to explain these to young minds that question rationality in everything. How else can the subtle forces that operate on our mind, thoughts, and ideas be explained to illiterate? But one thing is certain. The youngsters these days have no time for all these scriptural studies and have no patience to carefully think and understand them. it is also certain that the consequence is frightening!
   Shakti cult has spread along the coastal India from Kerala to Assam. Here Kali, Durga, Kamakhya and other Shakti devata are worshiped, some as vamachara taking recourse to sex, animal sacrifice,  alcoholic drinks and other indulgences prohibited by the Scriptures. There are practices approved by the Scriptures such as worship of Kamakshi, Meenakshi, Padmavati, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Durga during Nava Ratri and Deepavali. The daily rituals include Gayatri japa and Pranayama together, in a set order (Gayatri pranayame viniyogah). Gayatri Mantra is only a mantra set to the Metre of its name of four line of 23, 23 and a half, or 24 letters! Little do we know that the actual mantra is only tat savitru varenyam bhargo devasys dhee mahi dhee yo yonah prachodayat. This is the third line, pada. The first line is 'Om' and it stands for A U M -the first alphabet of Rk, Yajus, and Saman Veda. The second line is that of Seven Realms (sapta vyahruti) indicating the level of existence from 'Bhu' or earth to heavens, the 'Svar'! The last line, pada is a prayer requesting the devi to activate these powers that are already within us! The 23 or 24 letters of the Gayatri stand for 12 mantra devata- each with its own shakti, yantrakshara, bijakshara, and adhyatma and loukika nature and phalaprapti and phalashruti. The first twelve devata are of mantra devata- adhya, brahmi, vaishnavi, shambhavi, vedamata, devamata, vishvamata, rutambhara, mandakini, ajapa, ruddhi and siddhi. These are vaidiki devata. and each has a mandala. and a mantra to propitiate the devata. then, the twelve other tantriki devata are savitri, saraswati, lakshmi, duega, kundalini, pranagni, bhavani, bhuvaneshwari, annapurne, mahamaya, payasvini and tripura. These devata have their own bijakshara, mantra and `loukiki' and 'paramarthiki shalkti' giving bhukti and mukti. When practiced with breath control chanting the mantra in the ratio of 1:2:1  or 2:4:2 or 4:8:4 - puraka, kumbhaka and rechaka will give the desired results. These are to be chanted 108 times with total concentration and keeping the meaning and purpose in mind. The minimum is eleven and mere chant is of no use!
  Thus, these are for different types of japa and tapas. letters However, there is no proper explanation given for these in order to convince the younger generation. Actually, these worship of devi and devata is symbolic expression of our obeisance to the powers that control our thoughts and actions. It is re-affirming our faith in ourselves and nothing else! Each devi is shown with a number of hands and armaments and mudra as symbol of power. There is need for proper understanding of the evolution of mankind here.
   The present day generation suffer due to ignorance of this basic knowledge. There are numerous problems in society today due to negligence of dharma! There is influx of large population from other non-Hindu countries that has complicated the problems further. These immigrants do not respect, rather hate the Hindu faith and belief system. This has added to the problem, further. Our young minds fall prey to the teachings detrimental to Hindu culture and civilization.
   The result of neglect of Hindu dharma  has  brought large scale promiscuity and sex offences, children and young girls are exploited and sexually abused. There are births of mentally retarded and physically ill-developed organs. There is growing poverty due to greed, avarice, and selfishness. a strict way of Hindu dharma world have solved many of these! In fact, children and women are respected almost as Gods in Hindu culture.
   This dharmic way of life, god-fearing, abiding dharma, and righteous living are given up today, even by the Hindus, due to the influence of Western culture. The consequences are there to see. There is no solution to this problem unless the Hindu society is well organized and boycott and shun Western culture.

Festival of Lights- Deepavali

   Come 'Deepavali', also known as Diwali, the entire country rejoices celebrating the festival of Lights. The festival has significance in that "the evil is warded off, ignorance is cleared, and darkness ends"! This is the day of worship of machines, tools, and weapons that produce, protect, and help us to preserve ourselves. Naraka chaturdashi, Bali padyami are significant in that Vishnu and Lakshimi are worshiped. Vishnu came as, Vamana, a dwarf brahmin boy and asked three feet of land from the arrogant King Bali (of Indonesia?). His pride was annihilated when he gladly acceded to His request and offered him three feet. To his astonishment, one foot covered heavens, the other earth and the third one had no place but the head of King Bali. Thus, King Bali's pride ended!  In fact these three paduka, feet are there even today- one in Bali Is., one in Gaya and, the third one under the Kaba in Mecca, the ancient site of Vishnu pada!
   This has a good lesson for us, too. Our ignorance is cleared by knowledge,darkness is cleared by Light, and pride by sacrifice.

Creator and His Creation

The Vedic hymns give us a clear idea about the creation and the power behind it.
  “Some learned men speak of the inherent nature of things and some speak of time, as the cause of the universe. They all, indeed, are deluded. It is the greatness of the self-luminous Lord that causes the Wheel of Brahman to revolve. He by whom the whole universe is constantly pervaded is the Knower, the Author of time. He is sinless and omniscient, It is at His command that the work which is called earth, water, fire, air and akasa appears as the universe. All this should be reflected upon by the wise. The yogi who first performs actions and then turns away from them and who practices one, two, three, or eight disciplines, unites one principle with another principle and with the help of virtues cultivated by the self and of subtle tendencies attains Liberation in course of time. He who attains purity of heart by performing actions as an offering to the Lord and merges prakriti and all its effects in Brahman, realizes his true Self and thereby transcends phenomena. In the absence of maya, both collective and individual, all his past actions are destroyed. After the destruction of the prarabhda karma he attains final Liberation.” [Yajur Veda, Shvet. Upa., Part I, Chapter VI, 1-4]
   “With all the pleasing skill we may; the birth of Gods we now proclaim in chanted hymns, that Men to come may know the truth of what   befell. The Lord of the Holy Word, like a smith, blasted and smelted them together. In erstwhile ages of the Gods from nonexistence existence came.” [Rk Veda X, 72, 1-2].
  “The Seer, our father, once offered all these worlds in oblation, assuming a priestly role, and sought to gain riches by the power of prayer; he himself entered later creations, while shrouding in mystery the first creative moment. “
What was the primal matter, what the substance? How could it be discerned, how was it made? From which the Designer of all things, beholding all, fashioned the Earth and shaped the glory of the Heavens?”
  “A myriad eyes are his, a myriad faces, a myriad arms and feet, turning each way! When he, sole God, creates the Earth and Heavens, he welds them together with whirring of arms and wings.”
What was the timber and what the tree from which the Heavens and also the Earth were chiseled forth? Ponder, O wise Men.     Question in your hearts. On what did he rely when he formed these worlds?
    “The haunts where you dwell, O Designer ever true to your laws, on high, in the depths, and in every region between, disclose to your friends at the hour of oblation. Willingly offer your body in sacrifice, thus enhancing its vigour.” [Rk Veda X, 81, 1-5].

"Sit and Wait for Death"?

    Nobel Laureate for Chemistry this year is a 95 year old person. When asked: "Are you still working?" he answered, "What should I do? Should I retire, sit and wait for death?"
   This raises a question 'what is it he is talking about'? He is aware of 'death' awaiting. He does not know when it comes. He thinks he has to sit and wait and there is nothing else to do. But this is not the case of a person of spiritual background, legacy, samskara
    The question remains- "Should one continue to work till death?" At 95, if a person wants to continue to work till death, there is no problem. It is his sheer will and wish. Much depends on his good health and mind and moods. But this raises a fundamental question "Whether a person is born here to work, earn name, fame, money and live a life of joy and happiness, or live like Sri Shankaracharya? A material scientist always thinks of 'Matter'. A spiritual thinker always thinks of the 'Spirit' behind that 'Matter'. Matter is gross and may be found in solid, liquid, plasma or the gaseous state. Even we, the humans as 'Matter' is a composition of air, fire, water, food (earth/soil) - the pancha bhuta. We are water (70%) and earth (28%)- mostly, carbon-hydrogen-oxygen and a small proportion of other elements, compounds and minerals. It is natural for a person of limited knowledge (thinking only of matter) to think only of materialistic worldly things and very rarely takes to spiritual studies and practices (yoga). For an enlightened matured person spiritual attainment of the natural state is more important than achieving worldly successes.
    The time required for spiritual attainment is too long,often taking the jivatman several lives to attain it! The worldly person forgets that the earth is a death knell and whoever and whatever appears here is limited by time, space and causality. Old age, sickness and death are certain. Hence the jiva should strive to attain to its natural state, the state before taking the earthly existence before it is too late. One should attain this true nature before becoming old and infirm. The mind of a Hindu is always working in this direction. India is 'yoga bhumi', not a 'bhoga bhumi'. It is sad people do not understand this secret.

Stages of Awareness (prajnya-stara)

    There are different layers of Consciousness although Consciousness is ONE only! The thick layers are at the top and the thinner and thinner lower. The highest is the 'Krishna prajnya' and the lowest is the 'Bhishma Prajnya'. Now we, the humans, are endowed with only a small and limited consciousness. We have to struggle hard toraise in our level taking recourse to yoga.
 The jiva runs through three stages such as jagrata, sapna, and sushupti. These are stages are separated by narrow intervals of short period that goes without notice. The person, purusha, awake through all these three stages is the Agni deva. He is vaishvanara during jagrata, taijasa during svapna and prajnya during sushupti. He is also present and mahat or vishva during the fourth stage called turiya. He is called daiva and brahmn in the higher stages beyond.
   When the self remains in the dream state, these are its achievements (results of past action): It then becomes a great king, as it were; or a noble brahmin, as it were; or attains, as it were, high or low states. Even as a great king, taking with him his retinue of citizens, moves about, according to his pleasure, within his own domain, so does the self, taking with it the organs, move about according to its pleasure, in the body..
    Next, when the self goes into deep sleep-when it does not know anything-it returns along the seventy-two thousand nerves called hita, which extend from the heart throughout the whole body and remains in the body. As a baby or an emperor or a noble brahmin lives, having reached the summit of happiness, so does the self rest.
     As the spider moves along the thread it produces, or as from a fire tiny sparks fly in all directions, even so from this Atman come forth all organs, all worlds, all gods, all beings. Its secret name (Upanishad) is the Truth of truth. The vital breaths are the truth and their truth is Atman. [Yajurveda, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad II, I-Relative Aspects of Brahman, 18-20]
    These seven gods that prevent decay worship it (the calf): through these pink lines in the eye, Rudra attends on it; through the water in the eye, Parjanya attends on it; through the pupil of the eye, the sun attends on it; through the black of the eye,fire attends on it; through the white portion, Indra; through the lower eyelid, the earth; and through the upper eyelid, heaven attends on it. He who knows this-his food does not diminish. [Yajurveda, Brihadaranyaka Upanishad II, II-Description of the Prana, 2]
     May whatever appeasements there are in the world, known by the Seven Sages, may they all be gracious to me! May peace be with me! May fearlessness be with me. [Atharva Veda XIX, 9, 13]

'Pravrutti' and 'Nivrutti'

   There are some verses in the Gita where Bhagavan Shree Krishna says, "Surrender to Me. I shall take care of you". It is also said that, "There is no need to do anything! I am the doer." But, these statements are not meant for all. These statements are age-specific! People of different ages like the children, adults, middle-aged and the family people are excluded from this. It is natural for these people to be engaged in some action and there is no escape! Aged people who are asked to retire from all activities need to take this advice of the Lord and keep quiet. But, even these aged people are not exempt from certain daily routine activities such as eating, sleeping, walking and maintaining the body. However, it is important to note that these routine activities also can be avoided like the Yogis who sit in transcendental meditation for long hours and days!
   'Pravrutti' is action, and 'nivrutti' is inaction. It is natural for people to be engaged in action when there is no other alternate, but work. However, people who are well provided for, having no problem of earning a livelihood are also seen unnecessarily engaged in action. Here lies the cliche. The Yogi who wants to attain the state of the absolute, brahmn, takes to sacrifice. Yogis sit in kumbhaka sacrificing the in-breath for the out-breath, and the out-breath to in-breath! The state of absolute quietness is advocated here! The question of eating and sleeping does not arise here, at all! This is the spiritual practice of a few yogis who take to advice of the Lord, "tasmad yogirbhavaarjunaa|
   All actions bring forth reaction and fruits of action in turn and leads to eternal bondage. there is no solution other than taking to yoga for the one who wants to break the shackles of chains of repeated births and deaths. Hence this rigorous spiritual practice is advised by the Lord.
   See pravruttim cha nivrutti... Ch. XVI verse 7; Ch. 18. Verse 30; sarvadharmaan parityjya... Ch. XVIII Verse 60, sarvarambha parityagi; sarvaasha parityjya, sarvabhava parityajya, etc. All these verses advice the devotee to renounce the worldly transient happiness and surrender to Him. he will take of His devotees!

Navaratri

The term 'nav' (nine) 'ratri' (Chit-shakti/ Knowledge/Forces) actually means nine (types) knowledge. These are akin to nine 'bhava-rasa' (emotions), nine musical tones (sounds/raga). The firs emanate of the maha purusha Narayana is the prakruti ; 5 jnyanendriya and manas, buddhi, chitta, and ahankara. Now the entire universe is the product of these nine aspects of prakruti/nature. The learned ones worshiped prakruti in these nine forms giving it the feminine forms in the nine Devis. In fact all the forces that emanate from th epurusha are termed feminine although these are no different from the purusha. Lakshmi Tantra of the Agama Shastra gives more details.
    one should be cautious about using the terms like feminine forms! There are no masculine or feminine at higher levels of consciousness ('chit'). The principle of 'oneness' (samatvam) should always be kept in mind. Purusha and prakruti are one and inseparable! It is the manifest forms that give us illusion of separateness! This avidya, lack of higher knowledge, has given rise to tantrics to separate shive /shakti from shiva /pusrusha, forgetting the fact that shive is the prowess of shiva only! there is no sunrays without the sun or the waves without a sea. The heat and the fire are inseparable. Thus, whoever attains to this oneness becomes one with the the supreme!
  The practice of worshiping separate Goddesses like Durga, Sharada, Kamakhya, Mahalakshimi or any other Devi by different names, almost a hundred, may be the result of identifying the powers of the supreme! All that we worship reaches the One supreme narayana! sarvam vasudevam iti |

Bhagavan Shree Krishna

Who is “Bhagavan Shree Krishna”?
   Nobody knows who this supreme Lord paramatma shree Krishna is ! The Lord only is saying that nobody can ever know him, especially, when He is presented in human form, avatara purusha !Just because I have donned the human form the fools do not know Me.” Neither these fools know the Unborn and the Indestructible Paramatman Shree Krishna, nor do they know the great hero born of the ‘Power of the Sacred Word’ (mantra shakti) of Indra called Arjuna ! The supreme Lord has the power of ‘tirodhana’ and thereby may assume any form simultaneously and appear or disappear, as and when, and wherever it pleases Him. The reason behind this statement “Nobody can ever know Me” is very simple. The Lord, says, “He only exists and none, besides Him”. Further, He, the Lord, is not somebody, something or some subject that be seen, known or understood! Bhagavan is the unborn, eternal, immortal Power, force, energy behind all creations. He is the unmanifest maha purusha, the seed that propagates the entire universe in different names, forms and functions, in His own manifest forms. It is like the one invisible potent seed that creates a tree which becomes a forest! So also the manifest forms of jiva that replicate in the same way, on the same principle. This is stated in “Everything we see is Krishna”. Chapter II explicitly states that all that exists is Krishna only.
  The ‘Gitopadesha’, as revealed to the First ever self-manifest person (manas) svayambhuva manu, the first self-manifest (svayambhu) makes it clear that the human beings now reading these lines never existed at that time! The Gita, as the para vidya, knowledge supreme, pertaining to Creation, sustenance, development, and dissolution dates back to at least 4.56 billion years when the Sun, Vivasvan, was just born. The Earth as a planet of the solar system and the Moon as its satellite, came later! So, where were the humans at that time! Even the Sun as a star, svayambh manu Vivasvan was not yet there when the supreme Lord only existed as Aditya, now Shree Krishna!
The first six manvantaras that have gone by are: 1. the svayambhu, 2. svarochisha, 3. Uttama, 4. taapasa, 5. raivata, and 6. chakshusha. The present manvantara is the seventh known as the vaivasvata. The next seven manvantaras to follow are: 1. surya savarni, 2. Daksha savarni, 3. brahma savarni, 4. dharmasavarni, 5. rudra savarni, 6. deva savarni, and 7. the indra savarni manvanatras. Incidentally, all these manus are nothing but stars having their own saptarshis, devi-devata, physical powers or elemental gods, or deities called Shakti! Each cycle lasts for 4, 320,000 years!
    We, the human beings, reading the Gitopadesha today, in the kaliyuga (First quarter/prathama charana or paada) of the chatur-yuga (the other three being kurta or satya, treat, and dvapara), the last phase of the Seventh manvantara called the Vaivasvata manvantara) should be careful in understanding what the Lord Shree Krishna is speaking about His divine plan of Creation and the paraphernalia of all that is to come to the Sun, just when He was appearing in the Heavens! The Sun, at the head of the solar system, is to run the entire creation, sustenance, development, and dissolution as His own manifest form as Vishnu, Surya Narayana! This is the divine plan of the Gita. These are the words of the Lord- Bhagavan uvacha.
    The supreme Lord holds the key and the jiva works according to the dictates of the Lord. Finally, as a Yogacharya, the Lord helps the jiva to realize its true nature and merge in Him.

FACE

   The most intriguing aspect of creation is the face, particularly, the eyes.But for the face, there is no difference whatsoever in body. All bodies are same foe either the tigers or cats and dogs, or even men and men. Only the eyes make the difference. The worst thing is that even these bodies and faces undergo change over time. This is the maya aspect of creation. This leads us to the fundamental principle of 'maya' (illusion).
    Now, the problem is of identification. The eyes are instrumental in identification. Behind the eyes lie the powerful instrument of Mind.Mind sees through eyes, or may even see without eyes! The Mind sees through an inner eye lit by the soul, the Atman. Ultimately, the Atman is more important. This 'Atman' is the same for all.  Thus, only those who see through the eyes. light, of the Atman only see the true face!
   What all we see is ourselves! When we look at a person, we see ourselves in their eyes. This 'oneness' is the fundamental principle. The Bhagavad-Gita explicitly states that a "jnyani is one who sees oneness". 'Samatvam', equanimity, is the very essence of the Gita.
    The jnyani is one who has trained himself to see through the Atman and thus overcomes illusion!

Narayana

  नारयणः परो व्यक्तादंडमव्यक्तसंभवम् ।अंड्स्यांतस्त्विमे लोकः सप्त द्वीप मोदिनि॥
Om, nArAyaNaH paro ‘vyaktaadaMDamavyaktasaMbhavam |
aMDsyaaMtastvime lokaH sapta dvIpa ca modini ||
    In the prayer eulogizing nArAyaNa* the supreme Lord, of whom ShrI kriSNa here is an incarnation, it is stated that the entire universe is the manifest form of the Unmanifest parabrahmn and this nArAyaNa is higher (paramam) than the Unmanifest. The word anDasyAnta means, the ‘cosmic seed’ (hiraNyagarbha)- the Golden Egg, the Sun. The Sun is the First manifest form, svayaMbhu manu vivasvAn. This is the beginning of the universe for us for all practical purposes. It is the bhu, bhuvaH, and the sv ar. Subsequently, the family of this svayaMbhu manu, the Father of mankind, manu vivasvAn (the Sun), the Mother Earth, and the other members (that includes all the planets and their satellites of the Solar System) are formed out of the Stellar matter (ejected material of the Sun). Thus, the earth with its ‘seven Islands’ (sapta dvIpa) emerging from the unmanifest ‘parabrahmn’ is symbolic presentation of the souramandala (‘Solar System’) with the Sun at its centre. Hence, nArAyaNa, Aditya, BAskara, surya, ravi, teja, prakasha, or call it by any name, is the Self-effulgent, omniscient, sovereign power that provides ‘Energy’ to the Stars- the Sun and a million or trillions of them!
    Aditya, surya, ghruNI is the Veda mantra. Besides, there are many larger stars than the Sun and much bigger, giant Stars like the puShya nakShatra in our galaxy, the Milky Way! The source of all these is nArAyaNa is ‘eko devaH, the only God, the unmanifest supreme Consciousness from which emanate sat, cit and ananda. This and that as well as here and there begin here. He, She and it start here. The sage nara-nArAyaNa are portrayed as the First Rishi. The term nArAyaNa is derived from nara and ayana. The term vAsudEva is mentioned as a god along with nArAyaNa and viShNu (taitteeriya upaniShat, 10.1.6).
   According to SrI SaMkara, ‘nara’ refers to all the moving and non-moving (caracara) bodies and ‘nAra’ to ‘individual souls (Atman); nArAayaNa is supreme Consciousness and it is reflected (pratibimba) in all beings as indivudual consciousness. This is the underlying force that ordains, supports, and maintains the Jiva as the inner Controller (yama).
    The supreme power behind the Stars are the one ‘parabrahmn’, nArAyaNa. This nArAyaNa is supreme Consciousness. Thus, nArAyaNa is eulogised as mahajnyeya, the omniscient. He is Shree Krishna- the all-knowing, eternal, immortal, undiminishing one- acyuta; he is Unborn, Eternal, Immortal, and Undiminishing ananta.
     The Unmanifest One’ that manifests as many is calledmAya’, akShara brahmn, the Immutable. It emanates as the ashTa-prakRuti- the Five Senses, Mind, Intellect And the ego, manifest form of Lord Shree Krishna. knows Him! The bhagavad-gItA is that part of the Vedic Literature where the lord is
    SrIman nArAyaNa is eulogized as vAsudeva, the Lord of the universe- bhu, bhuvaH and svaH.* He is called as gOviMda, viShNu and a thousand other names! The “Nameless One’ is called by a thousand names and the ‘Formless One’ is seen in a thousand forms by the Rishis. Eko dEva vipra bahudha vadaMti |
  जगत्प्रभुं देवदेवमनंतं पुरुषोत्तमं। स्तुवन्नामसहस्रेण पुरुषः सततोत्थितहः॥
   jagatprabhuM devadevamanaMtaM puruShottamam |
   stuvannaamasahasreNa puruShaH satatotthitahaH ||
Sri Hari Narayana exists everywhere at the same time in any form He desires!
Even the Gods and Rishis cannot know Him. But, one who always chants His name can!
