The Rk Veda sukta is a collection of Rks (mantra0 envisioned by a Rishi with the help of a devata and through a certain Chhanda (Meter). For example, the visionary of the Gayatree mantra is Madhuchhanda Vaishva Mitra (R.V. 3. 62. 10). It is a revelation that the Seer got with the help of paramatma Narayana devata and through Gayatree Chhanda. This famous Rk Veda mantra is a very powerful one that can resurrect any irregularities in the function of a jiva and bring emancipation. Thus, Madhuchhanda Vaishva Mitra could become a Rishi only after envisioning the Gayatree mantra. A Rishi is a jnyani who has got at least one mantra to his credit. This mantra is already there in the parame vyoman, Akasha, where the sounds travel! Gods and Goddesses, rather, devi devata occupy this abode and their blessings help the spiritual seeker to get connected to these anahata shabdha, feeble inaudible sounds through extra-censorial perception or transcendental meditation. All Rishis are jnyanis, but all all jnyanis are not Rishis.
Who can become a Rishi?
There is no specific method by which one becomes a Rishi or sage-seer. However, spiritual practices adhyatma sadhana. is prescribed as in the Patanjali yoga sutra or Shandilya yoga sutra to become a purified person eligible for this higher spiritual status. Gods or cosmic powers can only bestow their grace on the spiritual seekers, the sadhaka, and reveal the sacred word Rk (mantra). Then only the sadhaka becomes a Rishi.
The Sage-seers are are supposed to be the one who is created as such by Soma, the Deity of Ananda /Bliss/Delight. Here, the supreme knowledge, wisdom (viveka) brings 'enlightenment' and bliss. Still such a person may not be the one who had the revelation, visioning or the gift of the divine word, Rk, mantra or a sukta.
Rk Veda 1. 31. 16 says, agni dEva, the purifier, creates a Rishi, an enlightened soul with a revelation, whereas, Rk Veda 9. 96. 18 says, sOma creates a seer. Soma is the deity of 'sat' (amrut), elixir, immortality. Although a number of Rks, suktas state that there are female Rishis, it is not clear how can one say that a person is male or female at that exalted state of high consciousness where the duality, the body or sex consciousness has disappeared! There are no male and female gods or Rishis. When a person crosses the manipura chakra level he /she becomes eligible for mahat -prajnya devoid of all dualities. Hence, it is very important to note all the discrepancies in the interpretations giveen by some commentators who do not have the inner meaning of samskruta syllables.
As a spiritual seeker rises from step to step in his sadhana, he goes on dropping lower level of consciousness and ultimately reaches the highest exalted state of oneness with brahmn. Hence anybody can reach the highest level of brahmn by constant spiritual practice of dhyana, dharana, samadhi with a single minded or focused attention on brahmn.
Thus, we may come across enlightened persons, jnyanis or even the Rishis and devi devatas amidst us! But are we capable of recognizing them? Their blessings, in word, gestures, mutterings or signs of hand (mudra), or just a smile, touch, glance, or even a side glance is enough to enable us to cross the ocean of sansar! Strange are the ways of the learned Rishis.
